Dedication and Leadership Seminar
Youth Room | Sundays | 7:15-8:45 PM
Five Weeks: March 21, March 28, April 11, April 18, & April 25
We say, “The youth are our future” but we rarely train young people in the skills they need to take on those tough leadership roles. For those involved in The Upper Class, we are going to spend 5 weeks studying and developing honest leadership strategies, tactics, and overall skills to be effective leaders.
Extracurricular activities have been dramatically cut down due to COVID. This has wider repercussions in students’ lives, especially the Seniors, who lose both the experience and a better college application. Our Dedication and Leadership Seminar will help solve this. On top of learning key skills to be a leader, any student that completes the five-week seminar will get a college recommendation letter on our behalf.
We explore a leadership theme each week through the lens of the Gospel and ask:
"What does it mean to be a leader?"
"But it shall not be so among you;
whoever would be great among you
must be your servant" -Mark 10:44
Self: Developing the Leader Within. Leadership is a responsibility, not a reward. Done well, it will increase your own sense of purpose while improving other people’s lives. Done poorly, leadership becomes a tool of manipulation. We teach how to lead oneself with integrity.
Lead: Influence, Authority, and Position. Not all bosses are leaders and not all leaders are bosses. Real leadership starts with influence, not one’s position. We identify credibility and integrity, and how to grow in these areas to grow in influence through the path of “Extreme Ownership”.
Deep Work. Using the research and insights of Cal Newport, we will learn how to engage in deep work- prolonged periods of intense concentration- and what are the major obstacles against living a Deep Work lifestyle. Building these skills will put you head and shoulders above others in school and work.
Crucial Conversations. We walk through the powerful skills developed by behavioral psychologists to have honest and effective conversations about difficult subjects when emotions are running high. Bypass the screaming, the slammed doors, or dismissals and actually work through the problem together.
Dedication and Leadership. Douglas Hyde trained thousands of Communists in the 1940’s and 50’s before his conversion to Catholicism. In his landmark book, Dedication and Leadership, he explains the techniques he developed to turn youth into leaders and how Catholics can build upon his experience.
